Why should team leaders (and people in general) care about character in business?

Strong character strengths result in better Returns on Assets, more engaged employees, and customers who are more satisfied and demonstrate higher loyalty. For example, Fred Kiel’s findings in “Return On Character” demonstrate that companies led by CEOs characterized by strong character outperform companies led by CEOs with weaker character. Specifically, they have:

  • Five times higher Return on Assets (ROA)
  • Greater individual employee engagement
  • Roughly 20% more job pride and satisfaction
  • Leading scores in the Customer Satisfaction Index

Generally speaking, Tilt’s character science research shows that developing balance in the 12 character strengths of the Tilt model transforms team climates via the psychological ingredients that optimize productivity, creativity, and innovation. To review available Tilt assessments, click here.

Tilt 365’s Framework

The Tilt Framework entails 12 key character strengths and explains how these strengths are interrelated. Strengths in the same quadrant are strongly related and combine to describe one of four meta-strengths: Resilience, Courage, Wisdom, and Humanity. For team leaders who want an easy-to-remember and easy-to-apply framework for understanding team members’ tendencies and for facilitating team cohesion, Tilt’s framework is a powerful option.

In the Tilt Framework, character strengths in opposite quadrants are counterbalances to each other. There is a common misconception that more is better when it comes to character strengths, but both overuse and underuse of different character strengths can be detrimental. Wielding character strengths in a balanced way yields positive outcomes, but negative outcomes are associated with unbalanced strengths’ manifestations.

Overuse and underuse can be counteracted by balancing any given strength with the strength shown opposite in the model. For example, overusing integrity can lead to being rigid and unbending, which is detrimental to likability.

Conversely, overusing likability and deferring to what everyone else wants is detrimental to integrity. Thus, balance in all 12 character strengths is key for agility, team cohesion, and team performance.

Tilt’s assessments create a climate for innovation

The True Tilt Personality Profile (TTP), the Tilt 365 Positive Influence Predictor (PIP365), and the Team Agility Predictor (TAP) have undergone rigorous psychometric evaluation and have shown evidence for reliability and validity.  For technical information on the psychometric evaluations of Tilt's instruments, click here. The assessments are continuously being revised, improved, and re-evaluated. Click here to access blogs that delve further into the science of character!

Character science research using the Tilt Framework has shown that when leaders have balanced character strengths they encourage a team climate conducive to creativity, innovation, and change. This team climate is a necessary precursor for team agility.
